The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) have introduced a new resource designed to help countries enhance their ability to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into public health systems. The “Artificial Intelligence in Public Health: Readiness Assessment Toolkit” is intended to guide countries in making informed decisions about the adoption of AI, with a focus on digital health, strategic planning, and improving health outcomes.
This toolkit offers a structured approach to evaluating critical aspects of AI integration, including governance, infrastructure, data management, and financing. It also considers the preparedness of the health workforce and the existing regulatory frameworks.
Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, Director of PAHO, emphasized that AI is playing a significant role in modernizing public health systems. He noted that the rapid evolution of AI presents powerful opportunities to enhance health services.
The toolkit features a methodology that includes questions across key categories such as the current state of healthcare infrastructure, digital health environments, data quality, and the readiness of health professionals. It also addresses the importance of public awareness, education, and engagement in the digital transformation process.
Dr. Barbosa reiterated PAHO’s dedication to supporting its Member States in the integration of AI into their health systems, stressing that adopting AI in public health is a collective effort to ensure inclusivity and equity.
