In 2003, at an event in Abu Dhabi, I met Emily Carter – a powerhouse of creativity. We hit it off instantly because she is a strong woman with clear conviction and hard work ethic. Over the years, her journey has only solidified her reputation as a visionary in luxury fashion and there are so many lessons other senior business leaders can learn from her hard work and focus on values.
A passion drawn from nature
The story of Emily Carter London began when Emily was just 19 and a student at the London College of Fashion. Emily not only completed her coursework two months early but also went above and beyond, submitting an extra project – a luxury scarf design. That design became the foundation of her now-celebrated brand.
At her core, Emily is a conservationist. Her designs are far more than exquisite accessories; they are intricate, hand-drawn tributes to the natural world. Crafted predominantly from silk – a fabric chosen for its ability to capture vibrant colors and organic patterns – each piece reflects her deep connection to nature and art.
Emily’s inspiration is rooted in childhood days spent exploring the countryside, where she developed a fascination with flora, fauna, and the delicate ecosystems that surround us. This passion infuses her scarves, wallpaper, and stationery with an unparalleled intricacy, transforming each creation into a celebration of the natural world.
Her British heritage is equally central to her brand’s identity. Every product is proudly made in England, using the finest fabrics and cutting-edge printing techniques.
The Foundations of Hard Work
After graduating, Emily faced the challenge of earning a living. She joined Harrods, where she spent excelled in sales, then tailoring which she lives. Her creativity caught the eye of Harrods executives, and she eventually became the Lead Designer for Creative Services – in fact she still does some freelance work for them now. Working in sales teaches you business fundamentals very quickly, so these formative years honed her entrepreneurial acumen and laid the groundwork for her future success.
The COVID-19 pandemic was a turning point. Furloughed from her role, Emily finally had the time and space to focus fully on her brand. A bold move – sending her scarves to top fashion magazines – paid off spectacularly when a photo of Kate Moss wearing one of her designs was featured in British Vogue. This single image catapulted Emily’s brand into the spotlight.
Challenges and Resilience in 2024
This year has been a turbulent one for Emily Carter, as it has been for much of the fashion industry. In early 2024, the luxury retail market faced a steep downturn, with major players like Liberty, Selfridges, and Harvey Nichols cutting back on external brands as consumers began questioning the need for luxury goods. The collapse of the Matches platform dealt a further blow, sending shockwaves through the independent fashion sector and causing a significant slowdown in the luxury market.
Yet, in the face of these challenges, Emily’s resilience and intuition shone through. She eventually turned her long-standing dream of a partnership with Fortnum & Mason into reality. For Emily, an introvert by nature, this required stepping outside her comfort zone to network – a skill she honed by building relationships with Fortnum’s buying and creative teams, ultimately securing the coveted opportunity to feature her designs.
Emily also embraced growth as a finalist in the JP Morgan Female Founders program, a transformative initiative that helped her refine her business strategy and sharpen her vision for the future.
Amid the year’s challenges, one of Emily’s proudest moments came on December 4, 2024, with the launch of her book Insectarium. Hosted by the Royal Entomological Society, the event celebrated a work that Emily views as one of her most meaningful achievement to date. Designed to raise awareness of conservation, Insectarium underscores her belief that she was born to make the world more beautiful through nature. For Emily, this project has reaffirmed her purpose, extending far beyond the world of fashion.
Secrets to Success
So what are the secrets to her success? There are three key things according to Emily: relentless hard work, an unshakable love for her craft, and a focus on values. She recognizes that anything creative is all-consuming. You have to make sacrifices and truly love what you’re doing to succeed. These are the things that led her to be recognised as one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in 2022.
Her connection to nature remains her core value, with every scarf telling a story about the species and landscapes that inspire her. This is what differentiates her and why people are so drawn to the brand in the first place.
What’s Next for Emily Carter?
Scaling her brand while maintaining its handcrafted, personalised ethos is a challenge, but Emily has a plan. Licensing her designs for new products, including luxury bedding, and expanding into the U.S. market with stores like Nordstrom are on the horizon. She hopes these ventures will allow her to focus on her passion for nature and conservation, aligning her business with her personal purpose.
With the world’s attention on environmental issues through events like COP29 and COP16, Emily’s mission to merge creativity with sustainability has never been more relevant. Her work embodies the intersection of art, nature, and leadership, proving that knowing your values and standing by them can lead to extraordinary success.
Thank you, Emily, for showing us what’s possible as a business leader when passion and values drive a brand forward.
