Building a tight-knit, strong, healthy company culture presents its challenges in environments where people work face to face together. With the Pandemic in 2020, it caused us to challenge our company structures by adapting to a remote-work team dynamic. With remote-work as the new norm, leaders across the globe are facing new challenges as it pertains to maintaining company culture. However, when those challenges are met, leaders and their teams typically experience a thriving company culture where productivity improves, innovation blossoms, and customer satisfaction increases very quickly.
Here are three tips for developing a healthy company culture among a fully remote team:
Embrace each team member’s goals, both personally and professionally
Acknowledging the personal aspect of your team members will only build in the success of a remote-work team. For example, you are now exposed to your team members’ personal lives by seeing their living spaces, family members, and even pets. The “new normal” is to sometimes hear a school bus driving by or a dog barking during a virtual meeting. Rather than being frustrated by some of these distractions, acknowledge and embrace them. This will demonstrate the dynamic human aspect of the team, and you as the leader.
Create a foundation of trust and workplace safety
Remote-work teams do not always necessarily work traditional hours from 8am-5pm as some of us may be used to. Remote teams should be provided the respect and acknowledgement that they are able to work the hours needed to meet their goals and deliverables. I can attest to this since I have moved into a remote work environment myself. Although my hours aren’t always the typical 8am-5pm time window, I find myself getting more done each day because of less distractions which makes it easier to focus and remain productive.
As a leader, it is up to us to demonstrate that there is trust and safety by functioning in the capacity that is needed. Accepting that there are challenges at times due to a remote work environment, it’s important to also embrace the tremendous output that your team is able to achieve with the right remote-team dynamics.
Share company wins
Sharing company wins does not always need to involve huge wins like 300% increases in revenue. Company wins can be as little as meeting a project goal, finding a new client, or figuring something out that is innovative and will positively impact the company.
Sharing wins with our teams positively motivates everyone, shows that we are focused on motivating and inspiring our teams, and provides a forum for additional communication opportunities.
